Construction of two new dry cargo ships launched in Turkmenistan

The construction of two new dry cargo ships for the agency "Türkmendeňizderýaýollary" started at the Turkmenbashi International Seaport. The project is being implemented by the "Balkan" Shipyard and Ship Repair Plant in collaboration with the South Korean company "Koryo Shipbuilding Industry Technology Co. Ltd."

Each vessel, fully compliant with international standards, will have a cargo capacity of 6,100 tons, a length of 123 meters, a width of 16.5 meters, and a hull height of 8.3 meters. The commencement of construction marks an important phase in the development of Turkmenistan's maritime transport sector and strengthens its position in the international maritime transport market, expanding international cooperation in shipbuilding.

More than 90 percent of the project participants are local specialists who have completed two-month specialized courses under the guidance of Korean experts. The project is expected to not only strengthen Turkmenistan's maritime fleet but also significantly enhance the professionalism of national personnel in shipbuilding.

The contract for the joint construction of the two 6,100-ton dry cargo ships between the "Balkan" Shipyard and Ship Repair Plant and "Koryo Shipbuilding Industry Technology Co., Ltd." was signed in September 2023. It includes training for the Balkan plant specialists in Korean shipbuilding technologies, the implementation of a quality management system at the plant, and the execution of design work in accordance with high standards of safety and environmental protection accepted in shipbuilding.
